What to do when a pipe bursts
A burst pipe loses about 200-400 gallons per hour. Stopping the source first saves the most.
What you'll learn
- How to find your main water shutoff (and why it should not be a mystery)
- When to use the meter shutoff if the house valve is seized
- Why slab leaks need a plumber before restoration starts
- What to do while you wait for the trucks
Step by step
- Find your main shutoff — usually at the meter or where the line enters the house.
- Turn off power to wet rooms at the breaker if the leak is near outlets.
- Open faucets at the lowest point in the house to drain pressure.
- Move belongings, electronics, and rugs out of the wet area.
- Call a plumber for repair and a restoration company for cleanup.
If your house shutoff is seized, you can shut off at the meter with a curb-key tool. Most homeowners do not own one — call us if needed and we bring tools.
